Runaway

My friend, Lisa, shared a Facebook post on February 2, talking about how, with the rise in self-driving cars, it’s only a matter of time before a country song is written about a guy’s truck leaving him. Well, you ask and you shall receive. I think it only took me a couple of hours to finish this. We both got a good laugh out of it 🤣

I was drivin’ down the road in my ‘lectric truck
on a peaceful Saturday afternoon
I didn’t have a care in the world
and the music was blarin’ on my radio

I pressed a button, hands off the wheel
and Ol’ Sparky drove me around
it was great to lean back and catch a quick nap
or watch the scenery wherever we’d go

I love this truck like no other
but there are some things that Ol’ Sparky lacks
the roar of the engine and smell of exhaust
are all no longer around

Gas-guzzling trucks are a thing of the past
so all I can do is just dream
about the days I’d put the pedal to the metal
and my truck was heard clear across town

I pulled into an old service station
I was lookin’ for a quick bite to eat
I parked next to an old Chevy truck
it was surely a blast from the past

As I walked into the front door
I couldn’t help but turn back and stare
that bright blue body was a thing of beauty
“Man”, I thought, “I’ll bet that thing hauls ass.”

I grabbed my snacks and made my way
up to the elderly clerk up front
I asked about that old truck outside
the clerk said, “She’s yours for the right price.”

I couldn’t believe what I’d just heard
my eyes grew as big as saucers
the thought of owning that beast was alluring
and drivin’ it around sure would be nice

He walked me out to take a better look
it would only be a minute or two
I just wanted to take a peak
at what all was under the hood

We strolled past ‘Ol Sparky
and I could tell she was a bit jealous
“How dare you look at another truck...
I thought what we had was good?”

The clerk popped the hood
the engine was a site to behold
a 454 big-block full house V8
and it even had four on the floor

As I cranked that V8, I glanced to my left
and saw that ‘Ol Sparky was gone
“You wanna play with another truck, huh
let’s see you get home now you cheatin’ whore!”

I hopped out of that old Chevy
and ran off down the road
I couldn’t believe what I’d just done
‘Ol Sparky drove off without me in tow

After all these years together
I can’t believe she’d run off like that
Just because I was lookin’ at another truck
doesn’t mean I don’t love ‘Ol Sparky so

That old clerk chuckled at my plight
and tossed me the keys to his truck
“Go after her, son, you’ve done her wrong.
You don’t want her crashing into a ditch.”

I said, “That old girl ain’t getting’ too far
we’ve been out for a while today.
The battery’s low and after all I’ve done for her
I don’t want to deal with that jealous bitch.”

The clerk nodded like he’d been there before
and asked if I wanted to buy
I looked at that old Chevy and then down the deserted road
“Hell yeah, let’s get this done.”

The deal was final and I was on my way
I found myself back on the road
About thirty miles away from the station
I saw that ‘Ol Sparky had ended her run

In her rage she had driven on past
the nearest charging hub
even if she’d gotten there in time
who was gonna plug her back in

I revved that Chevy and sped on by
There was just no goin’ back
I bid adieu to ‘Ol Sparky by flipping the bird
and I never saw her again
