Numbers
I’m a little late with this prompt. Because I had a lot of things going on in March, I never got around to getting this one done for the first April meetup of the writer’s studio. I decided to write it for the second one instead. As the title suggests, the theme was “numbers”. On my way home from the last meeting, where this was suggested, I already had lyrics/poetry in mind for this one, so that’s exactly what I did.
numbers, numbers here and there
you can’t escape ‘em, they’re everywhere
they’re a part of our lives, day after day
can’t shoo ‘em away, they’re here to stay
hit the ATM, gonna need that PIN
no matter where ya go, cash will always be king
every now and then, though, you’re gonna need to charge
that’s the price you pay for always livin’ large
gotta fill that phone, time to hit the juice
in the USA need that 120 or it ain’t no use
AC and DC is the name of the game
High Voltage or Thunderstruck, it’s all the same
need that DOB for everything thatcha do
on top of that, better bring that SSN too
be careful, though, when sharin’ the latter
cuz those digits in the wrong hands will surely matter
then there’s 911, it gets mixed reviews
it’s meaning depends, on whichever ya choose
had a slip and fall, need an EMT
watch the twin towers crumble, what did I just see
always playing games, ever since we were kids
dealin’ bridge or spades, you better make them bids
A board with 64 squares, let’s play, no shame
I trapped your king, check mate, bro, don’t start to blame
we’ve all got numbers that we don’t like
lotsa folks can’t stand the ones on the turnpike
there’s digits in some people’s minds that just have to go
personally, mine gotta be two, seven and zero
I read this to the group and everyone liked it. I was asked what the numbers meant in the last line, but I left it alone and said they’d have to look it up. Only one immediately got the reference I made. I’ll continue to leave that for the reader 😉
